Best antivirus for my needs (so far)., January 30, 2014

If I get a virus, that’s when I change an antivirus package. I’ve had to do it before, several times. I have not had to do it yet with Avast, and I’ve been using it for more than 4 years. It has controls I can customize. I can turn it off when I want to, temporarily, or even permanently. It has audible notices, if you like, for things like updates, or warnings of something suspicious.

My one complaint is that being a free product, it does occasionally nag you. It will nag me when other software isn’t up to date, or if it wants to offer me a paid upgrade of some kind. Or, to nag me to rate the software like I’m doing right now. I don’t mind a polite nudge or two, which is generally the case. What I do take offense to, generally, is being told something that has *NOTHING* to do with security needs to be updated. If I don’t want the latest flash update, that’s my business. Also, when you nag me to talk about how much I like your software, I’m going to mention that I was nagged to do so. This has been at least my second such nag message this week.

It’s really a small complaint, since I’m pretty sure I can probably turn them off. Point is, I shouldn’t have to.

Otherwise, I highly recommend Avast. It keeps me secure. It’s done so for several years. It’s certainly a lot better than software I’ve used before. My first was Norton, which I dropped after getting a virus, and because of fraud. It would claim that flash games were malicious trojans. Even well-known and popular commercial software products would be labeled as specific viruses. I also found out they’ve committed fraud in scans to make people believe their software is more necessary than it is. I’ve used AVG, as well. That was a pretty good antivirus, but when I got infected, I cast it aside, and went with Avast. I’ve been using it since.

best anti-virus I’ve ever used including ones I’ve had to pay for. All my friends even the ones who do IT work on computers recommend this program. It has found all the viruses and spy ware on my computers regardless of Operating System. I also use it to protect my mobile devices.

Need to Adjust Out of Box Settings – Caution – Changed my Home Page to Bing and Inserted Message into Outgoing E-Mail, February 8, 2014

At first I thought they changed my search engine to Bing, but it turns they only changed the home page to Bing. At first I only gave this 3 stars, but since it is free, it
doesn’t seem like there is much to complain about right now. If something happens, I will update – otherwise so far no problems. I’ve had it about 6 hours now.

2/10/14 – Review has now been edited. Just received a pop up that says Avast has certified my outgoing e-mail by inserting a small message into my outgoing e-mail.
Then it said to review options for this clicking inside the pop up box. I will need to Google this and report back what this is all about.

Shouldn’t I have had a chance to explore options before they sent something on my behalf?
This e-mail is used for business purposes, so extremely frustrating that my clients could be reading something that I have not had a chance to read yet.

2/14/14 – Review has been edited to tell you that certain websites had information removed. Example: I went to log into a credit reporting website, and could only see half my page. At my cell phone provider’s website, couldn’t access certain things. When I clicked on web under the options of Avast, it had been blocking scripts. I had to uncheck the box.

I’ve noticed that several web pages now loading very slowly, from IE to Google Chrome to FireFox to Opera.

I’m uninstalling it and see if things are back to normal. For now, this product is receiving a 1 star rating.

2/16/14 – I uninstalled Avast and my computer seems to be back to normal.
