Excellent Dog Food, January 22, 2012

I decided to try this dog food because of many positive reviews I read, and it is a good price for such high-quality ingredients. This is a better value than many other top-tier dog foods.

My dog (a 9-month-old German Shepherd) loves this food. I transitioned her from the more expensive Blue Buffalo Wilderness formula, and she’s doing very well on TOTW after a month. Her poops are small and easy to clean up. Her coat is shiny and she has no doggie odor. She also doesn’t scratch much at all. TOTW is good for allergy-prone dogs because it is grain-free.

One benefit of TOTW is that your dog eats less of it per day than other dog foods, thus saving money, because the food is high in protein. However, it’s also rather rich, so be careful when changing to this food to prevent diarrhea.

I highly recommend TOTW because it’s for all life stages, has proper ingredients for a dog’s diet, and is a good value for the price!

Our lab is a picky eater to the point that she was about 10% underweight just eating barely enough to keep her alive. That was on Lg Breed Puppy Eukanuba (sp?). Then, I ignorantly switched her to Purina Puppy Chow before I knew how bad corn is for dogs, the number one ingredient of that awful formula. She didn’t really like that, either, thankfully. Then, I switched her to Large Breed Puppy EVO. She liked that a bit better, and it didn’t have corn. But, I still had to put a bit of hot water on it and essentially drag her to the bowl. She did gain weight, though.

Then, EUREKA, we found Taste of the Wild. NO GRAIN!! All the nutrition she needs – I think she eats better than we do with this stuff. I guessed that being a bird dog she’d like the Roasted Fowl flavor. I opened the bag in the store and she wolfed it down like nothing else I’d ever seen.

Since then she’s eaten the amount of food she’s supposed to for her age and weight with no water added or cajoling into into eating. Granted, she’s still not a huge eater, but by the end of the day her allotment is eaten. Her weight is perfect, and she really does like the food. I’m glad I don’t have to add water so her teeth stay clean – it’s nice and crunchy. Her coat is gorgeous and her muscles rippling (we exercise her a lot). She’s got an amazing physique, and her dry skin/dandruff seems to be markedly reduced.

Taste of the Wild is worth every penny, and I believe in my heart that she’ll live a longer, healthier life (possibly years longer) for our having found it. Thank God for Taste of the Wild. We love her so much and this is the best dog food out there.

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

Our dogs love this food! They’ve been on it for over a year now.

    Pros:
    – The dogs LOOOOVE it!
    – Our dachshunds used to have issues with dry skin and lackluster coats. Now, they almost never get dandruff (even in the winter) and their coats are shiny and brilliant-looking. Best of all, after about 3 months of being on Taste of the Wild, one of our little guy’s coat filled out! He’d previously had almost no fur from his neck down his belly, but now he has a real coat!
    – Our dog with a sensitive tummy can eat it with no problems.
    – Ordering from Amazon is kind of a luxury! No more last-minute trips out of my way to the pet food store, no more schlepping 30-lb bags around. Having this dropped off at my door in only 2-days shipping with Prime is fantastic!
****- Buy from Amazon and track your bags’ serial numbers!! Last year, there was a big pet food recall (all Diamond food brands, which makes up almost the entire dog food market), and Amazon notified me of immediately. Unfortunately, I hadn’t kept the bags or the serial #, so I had to throw out my dog food but I’ll be ready next time. In all my years of dog ownership, I’d never before thought of food recalls – scary!

    Cons:
    – The only reason this doesn’t get 5-stars is because the bag is so flimsy that storage is a problem. I have a plastic storage bin big enough to hold a single bag. Unless you can keep the extra bags indoors and not manipulate or handle them at all, then I’d order a bag at a time. This is a pain because there isn’t a Subscribe and Save option, but it’s one problem I’ll willingly deal with for my dogs.
    – The shipping box it comes in is almost always busted- dented or bumped up. This doesn’t bother me because the product has NEVER been affected, but I know this would bug some people.

    Warning:
    – Once you put your dogs onto Taste of the Wild, they’ll likely snub their nose to any “lesser” dog foods! Now this might not sound like a problem, but if you can’t get a hold of this food it can become a problem fast! Last year, after the pet food recall I couldn’t get Taste of the Wild for a month and our dogs were verrry finicky.

A last note on flavors: the Fowl and Potato is their favorite. They love the fish one, but if they let it linger in their bowls it kind of stinks up the house! They liked the venison flavor, but they get excited about Fowl so we keep them on this one.

UPDATE: I have to give credit where credit is due… 2 orders after I wrote my post, my new order arrived in a bigger, better-packaged box. It was approximately 1.5 times the width of the bag and had a decent amount of packing material so I couldn’t cut the bag when opening the box with an exacto knife. I really appreciated that they changed the packaging (presumably due to my review, as I’ve ordered at least 10 times before my review). Keep up the good work!
